LCDR Jeff Smith is a native of Glen Mills, PA, and is a 1997 graduate from the United States Naval Academy. While attending the Academy, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering and lettered in Varsity Football.
Following initial Surface Warfare Officer training in Newport, RI, he reported on board USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62), homeported in San Diego, CA, in March 1998. There he served as the Strike Officer and Damage Control Assistant. As Strike Officer, he executed a Tomahawk cruise missile strike in support of Operation DESERT FOX.
In March of 2000, he transferred to USS ZEPHYR (PC 8) where he served as Weapons Officer. There he participated in a Counter Narcotics deployment to USSOUTHCOM and a homeland defense deployment for Operation NOBLE EAGLE.
Upon completion of his second Division Officer tour, he reported to AFLOAT TRAINING GROUP, Pacific, where he served as a Cruise Missile Tactical Qualification Officer. There he trained and qualified Pacific Fleet ships in Tomahawk and Harpoon employment. Beginning in June of 2003, LCDR Smith studied business at the University of San Diego and earned his Master’s in Business Administration in January 2005.
LCDR Smith reported on board USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) in November 2005, as the Weapons Officer. During his tenure, he earned his Tactical Action Officer letter and deployed to the Western Pacific. He assumed duties as the Combat Systems and Senior Watch Officer in September 2007 and deployed again to the Western Pacific to support SEVENTH FLEET Ballistic Missile Defense requirements and to participate in the multilateral exercise FOAL EAGLE and Joint Exercise NORTHERN EDGE.
In October 2008, LCDR Smith reported to the Surface Warfare Directorate on the Chief of Naval Operations staff (N86) for assignment as the Surface Strike Requirements Officer. During his tour he was the resource sponsor for the Tomahawk Weapon System and the Executive Assistant to the Deputy for Combat Systems (N86C).
LCDR Smith reported to USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37) in March of 2011 to serve as Executive Officer.
