Captain Walt Towns is a native of Chicago, IL. A 1983 Psychology graduate from Loyola University of Chicago, Captain Towns was commissioned an Ensign in June 1983 at Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI. After receiving his commission, he attended Surface Warfare Officer School.
Sea duty assignments include tours as Electronic Material Officer and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer on USS PAUL (FF 1080), Fire Control Officer and Navigator in USS STERETT (CG 31) homeported at Subic Bay, Philippines, Combat Systems Officer USS MOINESTER (FF 1097), Assistant Operations Officer USS INCHON (LPH 12), Executive Officer USS CUSHING (DD 985), Operations Officer USS WASP (LHD 1), Commanding Officer USS BOONE (FF 28), and Commanding Officer of USS KEARSARGE (LHD 3). Captain Towns has completed deployments to the FIFTH, SIX AND SEVENTH Fleet area of operations.
Shore duty assignments include Division Officer at Recruit Training Command Orlando, FL and Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff of Combined Forces Command, Korea/United States Forces Korea/United Nation Command Korea in Seoul, South Korea. Completed a tour as the Branch Head for Current Ships and Fleet Maintenance on the CNO Staff of the Director, Surface Warfare N86, served as the Chief of Staff of COMPHIBGRU THREE in San Diego, CA, and most recently served as the Amphibious Warfare Branch Head for Expeditionary Warfare Division for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
Captain Towns assumed duties as Deputy Commander, Amphibious Force Seventh Fleet on October 14th, 2011
He is a graduate of the Naval War College where he completed studies in National Security Affairs.
