|CAPT Paul Gilmartin
Chief Of Staff
Captain Gilmartin is a native of Larchmont, New York. He received his commission as an Ensign in December 1990 following graduation from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Arts. He was designated a Surface Warfare Officer in 1993.
Gilmartin commanded USS COMSTOCK (LSD 45) from April 2008 to April 2010 operating in the Seventh and Fifth Fleet Area of Operations in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Additional sea billets include: Damage control division officer and deck division officer in USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) in support of Operation DESERT STORM and SOUTHERN WATCH (1991-1994); Acting chief engineer pre-commissioning unit CARTER HALL (1994-1995); Electrical officer, USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50)(1995-1997); Operations officer USS MOUNT VERNON (LSD 39) (1999-2000), Operations and plans officer, Amphibious Squadron THREE in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (2000-2002); Executive officer USS DULUTH (LPD 6) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2004-2005); Acting Chief of Staff and Assistant Chief Of Staff for Operations, Plans and Training, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE (2010-2013).
His shore assignments include Training Officer at Navy Marine Corps Reserve Readiness Center, Norfolk (1997-1998); Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center Wilmington, Delaware (2005-2007); Commanding Officer Navy Operational Support Center San Diego (2013-2014).
His personal awards include Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
In 2002-2003 Gilmartin attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI graduated with distinction and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies . Additionally, he was hand selected as an Associate Fellow for the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group XXII which developed innovative operational concepts.
Gilmartin reported again as Chief of Staff, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE in October 2014. ESG-3 conducts Amphibious Task Force, Logistics over the Shore, Defense Support of Civil Authorities and Emergency Sortie operations to support a full spectrum of theater contingencies, ranging from Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief to full combat operations. ESG-3 is the command element for three Amphibious Squadrons and eight Naval Support Elements in the Third Fleet Area of Operations.
