This week we celebrate the 238th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps. It provides us an opportunity to reflect upon their rich heritage and history. It is a tradition that has been essential to forming the world’s, premier Naval service.
At Expeditionary Strike Group THREE, our Marine Corps brethren are especially near and dear to our heart. They are our team-mates… standing side-by-side and shoulder-to-shoulder to do our nation’s bidding.
Since their inception, the Corps has been with us in expeditionary warfare and a myriad of other operations as the Navy-Marine Corps team.
At our very beginnings, during the landing at New Providence in March 1776 and to this very day; whether off the coast Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Japan, New Orleans or Sandy Hook… the team has always been there….as Comrades-in-Arms.
As Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE, I can think of no better partner, ally or friend than that of our US Marines. The Marines that are embarked onboard our ships are second to none, keeping in lock-step with the rich traditions of their forbearers; those who landed at Tripoli; raised the flag at Mount Suribachi; prevailed at the Chosin Reservoir; won every engagement in Vietnam, and marched into Baghdad.
Today, with 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) embarked onboard Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), we are stronger and more capable; as it was with 15th MEU and the Peleliu ARG, and as it will be with the 11th MEU and the Makin Island ARG. NO matter what the mission, the TEAM will be there…as it has been and as it always shall be… bonded together… by 238 years of blood…sweat…and tears.
Happy Birthday Marines---Semper Fidelis!
Rear Admiral F. L. Ponds
Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Three
