Command Master Chief (July 2010 - July 2011)

Master  Chief Smith entered the U.S. Navy on 7 August, 1986. He completed Basic Recruit Training, Hospital Corpsman “A” School, and Advanced X-ray “C” School in San Diego, California.  In May 1988, he reported for duty at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. 

Subsequent assignments in his career have included Naval Medical Clinic Pearl Harbor, 1st Medical Battalion, MEU Service Support Group 13, Surface Force IDC “C” School, Branch Medical Clinic Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Crete, USS PRINCETON (CG 59), Assault Craft Unit FIVE, 1st Marine Regiment/Regimental Combat Team 1, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit Command Element, and Naval Medical Center San Diego.  

Master Chief Smith was selected to the Command Master Chief program in 2008 and reported to the USNS MERCY (T-AH 19) as CMC in March of that year. While there, the ship completed a highly successful deployment that delivered humanitarian assistance to over 100,000 people in five Western Pacific nations during Operation PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP. In January 2009 he accepted orders to be the Command Master Chief for Field Medical Training Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California. During his tour at FMTB, he helped educate and train over 1600 Navy medical department personnel in preparation for service with the Fleet Marine Force. 

Master Chief Smith reported as the Command Master Chief to Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE in July 2010. 

He has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Health Sciences from The George Washington University, and is also a graduate of the Navy’s Senior Enlisted Academy and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course.  

Master Chief Smith’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, as well as numerous unit campaign and service awards. He is qualified to wear the Enlisted Fleet Marine Force, Enlisted Surface Warfare, and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist designators.
