A native of North Huntingdon, PA, Command Master Chief Nist enlisted in the Navy in July, 1989 and served as a Cryptologic Technician Operator and Information Systems Technician prior to his selection as Command Master Chief. His tours of duty include CINCUSNAVEUR Naples, Italy, White House Communications Agency, USS NASSAU (LHA-4), Commander Submarine Force Pacific Fleet, Hawaii Security Operations Center, USS O'KANE (DDG-77), International Security Assistance Force, Kabul, Afghanistan, and United States Pacific Command Joint Intelligence Operations Center.
He assumed duties as the Command Master Chief of USS RUSSELL (DDG-59) in September, 2011.
Master Chief Nist is a graduate of the United States Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 130) and the Command Master Chief Course. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
