CDR Alex McConnell
Executive Officer

CDR McConnell was raised in Ontario, Oregon. He attended the University of Idaho, graduating in 1999 and earning his commission as an Ensign through the Naval ROTC program. CDR McConnell is also a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned his Master of Science degree in Defense Analysis/Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict and completed Joint Professional Military Education Phase I.

His first sea tour was in USS COWPENS (CG 63) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan where he served as Communications Officer as earned his designation as a Surface Warfare Officer. In 2002, he received follow-on orders to USS STEPHEN W. GROVES (FFG 29) in Pascagoula, Mississippi as the Training Officer. While onboard GROVES, he deployed to the SOUTHCOM AOR for counter-narcotics operations. CDR McConnell’s first Department Head tour was as Operations Officer in USS REUBEN JAMES (FFG-57), homeported in Pearl Harbor, HI where he deployed to C5F’s AOR as a part of the PELILEU Expeditionary Strike Group in support of anti-piracy operations. During this tour he also deployed as an Individual Augmentee to CJTF-515, as Operations Officer, in support of anti-terrorism operations in the southern Philippines. CDR McConnell’s second Department Head tour was as Operations Officer in USS SAN JACINTO (CG-56). Where he deployed to the Mediterranean and Black Seas and participated in contingency operations off the coast of Lebanon in 2007.

Shore assignments include a tour with II Marine Expeditionary Force as a liaison between Commander Second Fleet and II MEF. During this tour, CDR McConnell deployed as the Senior Watch Officer for II MEF (Forward)/Regional Command (Southwest) in Helmand and Nimroz Provinces, Afghanistan. Most recently, CDR McConnell served at U.S. Strategic Command in Omaha, Nebraska where we was an Action Officer in the J33 as well as a Deputy Battle Watch Officer in the Global Operations Center.

His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, various unit citations. He is also holds the designation as a Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer.
