Aeia, Hawaii — It was Aloha Friday for the students of Alvah A. Scott Elementary School when their annual Fun Run field day took place on March 8, 2013. Volunteers from USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93) took part in the festivities and acted as safety observers for the students. Nine Sailors from CHUNG-HOON, including the Commanding Officer, as well as a number of parents and other military volunteers, were on hand for the Fun Run, which consisted of four activity stations and included students of all grades of Alvah Scott Elementary.
After a long week of rain, the clear, sunny skies were a welcome sight to the Fun Run participants, who took full advantage of the weather and got out for some exercise before the weekend. Activities included jumping rope, running, dancing, and an obstacle-course relay. “The younger kids needed a little more instruction, but for the older students we could kind of sit back and let them be competitive,” said Hull Technician Third Class Adam Covens, “And of course everybody loved the dance station.” Indeed, students and supervisors of all ages were caught singing along to the music.
Gas Turbine Systems Technician Third Class Amanda Jacobs noted, “This was just an opportunity for the kids to get out and exercise in a fun setting. I think everyone had a great time. I definitely had a great time!” At a time when physical health is being emphasized in schools, it makes sense for a group of physically fit Sailors to reach out and be an example to the youth in the community. Besides, who doesn’t like to get out of the classroom or off the ship and play outside, in Hawaii?
