Everett, WA (March 14, 2013) - “I relieve you, sir” CDR Collins steps up to the plate and relieves CMDR Matthew Roberts from his duties on USS Momsen
Change of Command Ceremony on USS Momsen
EVERETT, WA (March 14, 2013) - USS Momsen (DDG 92) celebrated Cmdr. Elaine Collins’ assumption of command March 14 with humor and, fortunately, bright sunlight. Collins assumed command from Cmdr. Matthew Roberts. Capt. Mark A. Johnson, Commander of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9, joked about how 22 months earlier he had turned over command of the ship to Roberts, then promptly became Roberts’ boss.

Collins is the first “fleet-up” commanding officer, promoted from executive officer, in the ship’s history. Collins’ extended family showed up en masse to support her.

Roberts served a busy tour that included international exercises, two work-up cycles, a deployment and a drydocking. Known for his brevity and humor, Roberts spoke of the ship’s accomplishments with jocular affability. He even surprised the Commodore about replenishing underway while driving the engines and pitch from local control. Roberts thanked and credited his family, Wardroom, Chief’s Mess, and Sailors for their effort and the ship’s success.
