|Commander Turhan Hidalgo
Executive Officer (September 2009 - September 2011)
A native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Commander Hidalgo attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island. He was selected for admission to the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Political Science with a Minor in Spanish, and his commission as Ensign in the United States Navy in May of 1993.
CDR Hidalgo reported to USS ESSEX (LHD 2) and served as Repair Division Officer and Gunnery Officer from May 1994 to October 1996. After completing a Western Pacific/Indian Ocean deployment and earning his Surface Warfare Qualification onboard ESSEX, he reported to USS AUBREY FITCH (FFG 38) as the Navigation Officer. Following a Standing Naval Forces Atlantic and a Counter Narcotics deployment, he decommissioned FITCH in December 1997. CDR Hidalgo was then assigned to the U.S. Southern Command as the Multi-National Exercises Officer for the Intelligence Directorate until August 2000.
Following a brief sabbatical, CDR Hidalgo resumed Active Duty service in October 2001 and served as Operations Officer onboard USS MCCLUSKY (FFG 41). While onboard “Mighty Mac,” CDR Hidalgo led the ship’s successful INSURV preparations, and served as the Aviation Facilities Officer and Safety Officer. Following completion of a Counter-Narcotics deployment to South America, Central America, and the Caribbean, CDR Hidalgo detached in June 2004.
CDR Hidalgo served on the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron Twenty One in USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) as the Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer from July 2004 to December 2005. He then reported to the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He graduated on December 2006 having completed the CGSC course of instruction, the requisites for JPME Phase I, Joint Plannner designation, and earning a Masters of Business Administration from Webster University with honors.
Following CGSC, CDR Hidalgo served as Damage Control Assistant onboard USS BOXER (LHD 4) from July 2006 to February 2009.
CDR Hidalgo’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (with two gold stars), the Navy Achievement Medal (with one gold star), the RADM Herbert E. Schonland Award for DC Excellence, and various unit and campaign awards.
