DARWIN, Australia – Guided-missile Destroyer USS Chafee (DDG 90) arrived in Darwin, Australia on Feb. 17 for a port visit as part of the commemoration ceremonies remembering the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin during World War II.

The visit to Darwin is an opportunity for Chafee Sailors to engage with their Australian Navy counterparts and to interact with the local community. The crew is grateful to be in Darwin during this time to help honor and remember those who sacrificed their lives and for those who continue to serve today.

"It’s an honor and pleasure to be here in Darwin," said Cmdr. Justin Kubu, Chafee's commanding officer. "The officers and crew of Chafee are thrilled to be to able to show our continued support to our brothers and sisters of the Australian Defense Forces during this time of remembrance. “

While in port, Chafee Sailors will engage in two community service events; they will visit the Darwin Royal Hospital and participate in Aussie Rules Football with the Clontarf Federation. They will also participate in ceremonies around the city, such as the USS Peary commemoration and the bombing of Darwin commemoration ceremony.
Chafee Sailors also look forward to enjoying the hospitality, culture and sights of Darwin. Australia is a favorite port of call for Sailors throughout the 7th Fleet.

Chafee is on an independent deployment from its homeport of Pearl Harbor, HI and is currently operating in the Western Pacific Ocean.
