|CDR Thane C. Clare
Commander Thane C. Clare was raised in Yokosuka, Japan and Alexandria, Virginia. A 1997 graduate of the College of William and Mary, CDR Clare received his commission from Navy Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.
At sea, CDR Clare served as First Division Officer and Auxiliaries/Cargo Fuels Officer in USS MONONGAHELA (AO 178), Combat Information Center Officer in USS ROSS (DDG 71), Operations Officer in USS McCAMPBELL (DDG 85), and Commanding Officer of Patrol Coastal Crew DELTA, USS SQUALL (PC 7), and USS WHIRLWIND (PC 11). From March 2014 through July 2015, he served as Executive Officer in USS MUSTIN (DDG 89).
Ashore in Washington, DC, CDR Clare served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as an International Programs Action Officer; Special Assistant to the Director, Navy Staff; Littoral Combat Ship Requirements Officer; and as a member of the Strategy Branch, where he served on the team that helped prepare the current edition of the Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower. Selected as an Admiral Arthur S. Moreau Scholar while ashore, he earned a PhD in International Relations from Georgetown University.
CDR Clare’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), in addition to various unit and campaign awards.
CDR Clare assumed command of USS MUSTIN on 6 August 2015.
