San Diego, CA — USS Preble (DDG 88) conducted a burial at sea ceremony while underway off the coast of San Diego in the Southern California Operational Area on June 20, 2012.
The burial of 12 veterans took place just after sunrise on Wednesday as the crew, including an honor platoon of Officers and Chief Petty Officers, a color guard and a firing squad assembled on the flight deck in their service dress blue uniforms.
Executive Officer Cmdr. Bob Bryans was the master of ceremonies, and Chief Petty Officer Culinary Specialist John Alexander offered prayers and the benediction.
Each veteran received a gun salute as they were laid to rest in the gentle blue sea.
“It is an honor to be chosen to conduct a burial at sea ceremony,” said Commanding Officer Cmdr. Kurt M. Sellerberg. “It is something we can give back to the families and the veterans who so honorably served our country.”
The families of the veterans will receive a chart of where their loved ones were buried, a burial flag and photos of the ceremony.
