Petty Officer Schermerhorn was born in Stuttgart, Germany on July 18th 1979. He spent most his young life in Upstate New York where he graduated from Campbell-Savona Central School in 1997. Currently he is attending Coastline Community College where he is pursuing his Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.

He was born in Stuttgart, Germany on July 18th 1979. He spent most his young life in Upstate New York where he graduated from Campbell-Savona Central School in 1997. Currently he is attending Coastline Community College where he is pursuing his Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts.

On December 2nd 2002, he reported to Recruit Training Command at Great Lakes, Illinois. Upon completion of recruit training, he was designated as Internal Communications Fireman Recruit and attended “A” School and Site TV “C” school at Service School Command (SSC) Great Lakes. He then reported to USS ELLIOT (DD 967) in San Diego, California where he completed a 5th Fleet deployment. He then transferred to decommission USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) following a deployment. Onboard USS Belleau (LHA 3) he qualified Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) and was advanced to Petty Officer Second Class. November 2005, he transferred to Forward Deployed Naval Forces Japan (FDNFJ) onboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) where he served as work center supervisor. December 2008, he transferred to Navy Munitions Command Detachment Pearl Harbor where he attended IVCS “C” School. In June 2012, Schermerhorn transferred back to Forward Deployed Naval Forces Japan aboard USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) where he was promoted to Petty Officer First Class and filled the role as Combat Electronics Division Leading Petty Officer.

He has been serving aboard USS Preble (DDG 88) since September 2014 and has already completed a Western Pacific deployment assigned to Carrier Strike Group NINE and Commander Task Force 70.

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and other unit and other unit and campaign awards.
