A native of Toms River, New Jersey, CDR Sharif H. Calfee graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. In April 2011, he completed a two-year assignment on the Joint Staff in the J-5 Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate as a Political-Military Action Officer for counterterrorism security assistance/security cooperation issues.
Afloat, CDR Calfee most recently served as the Combat Systems Officer and Weapons Officer in USS BUNKER HILL (CG 52) from February 2004 to October 2006 during which the command earned three Battle “E” awards, the Golden “E”, Unit Tactics Award and Spokane Trophy. Previous sea duty assignments include a tour in USS ELROD (FFG 55) from February 1997 to February 1999 as the Communications Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant. From May 1999 to December 2000, he was assigned to USS GETTYSBURG (CG 64) as the Fire Control Officer, which served as the Air Defense Commander for the ENTERPRISE Carrier Strike Group.
Ashore, from 2007-2009, CDR Calfee served as the Surface Warfare Distribution Junior Officer Sea & Shore Assignments Coordinator at the Navy Personnel Command (PERS-41) in Millington, TN. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School, where he graduated with a Master of Science in Computer Science in March 2003 and received the George Philips Academic Excellence Award. While at NPS, he completed the U.S. Naval War College Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase One curriculum, graduating with distinction. CDR Calfee is a graduate of the Joint & Combined Warfighting School at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), earning his JPME Phase Two certification, and was selected as the Fall 2010 winner of the JFSC Transformation Award.
CDR Calfee’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
