Howard CO Says Farewell after Successful Tour

SAN DIEGO (March 17, 2011) – Commander W. Scott Switzer was relieved by Commander Andree E. Bergmann as the Commanding Officer of USS Howard (DDG 83) during a ceremony held onboard Howard at Naval Station San Diego on March 17, 2011.

“It has been a privilege to have had the honor of leading the men and women of USS Howard for the past 22 months,” said CDR Switzer, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a native of Klamath Falls, OR.  “Everything we have accomplished during my tour is attributed to the hardwork and professionalism of Howard’s Sailors and the support of the families back home.  I have been blessed to serve with the finest crew in the fleet, and will never forget my time on Howard or the incredible group of sailors I had the opportunity to lead.”

CDR Switzer took command of Howard in May 2009 just as the ship was preparing for her surge deployment.  While on deployment, Howard conducted anti-piracy and counter-terrorism operations near the Horn of Africa and in the Red Sea.  Under his leadership, Howard earned the 2009 Battle E, the ASW Bloodhound Award, and the Unit Tactics Award for Destroyer Squadron Seven and has continued to maintain its standard of excellence in all aspects, especially ASW.  During the 2010 SRA yard-period, she received the cutting-edge SQQ-89 A(V)15 sonar-suite install, making Howard the premier ASW ship on the West Coast.

Known for his positive and calm leadership style, Switzer was revered and respected by his entire crew.
“A quiet, but strong leader, CDR Switzer was an outstanding commanding officer and I’m proud to have served under him,” said Master-at-Arms First Class Paul Zielinski and Howard’s Sailor of the Year.  “He was widely respected by the crew and we look forward to welcoming CDR Bergmann as our new CO.”

Bergmann, a native of Moraga, CA, although she claims Albuquerque, NM as home, is an alumna of Cal State Chico and earned her commission through Officer Candidate School.  She joins the Howard crew as a part of the Navy’s Fleet-Up program.  Having already served a 12-month tour as Howard’s Executive Officer, she is well-prepared to assume the role and title as Commanding Officer.

“It really has been a joy to work for CDR Switzer as his Executive Officer,” said Bergmann.  “His leadership and guidance have earned Howard an excellent reputation on the waterfront.  As the incoming CO, I look forward to carrying on Howard’s success on our upcoming deployment to the Western Pacific and here at home in San Diego upon our return.”

With Bergmann in command, Howard prepares for her upcoming 2011 deployment to the Western Pacific.  Anxious to head to sea, the crew looks forward the coming months which they expect to be full of exciting, yet challenging operations in both Fifth and Seventh Fleets.  “It’s been quite a while since we’ve been on deployment,” said Operations Specialist Second Class Terrence Carter and Howard’s Blue Jacket of the Year awardee.  “We were in the yards most of 2010, so it’s time to take Howard to sea and get back in the game.  I’m really looking forward to being operational again and the ports we’ll be visiting this deployment.”

Howard is homeported in San Diego, CA and is a member of the Ronald Regan Strike Group and Destroyer Squadron Seven.  Howard will be independently deploying this year in support of operations in the Western Pacific.  To learn more about the Howard and her crew, visit
