Command Master Chief

Command Master Chief Newell is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the Navy in March of 2000 and attended Basic Training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL.

Following completion of basic training, he reported to Groton, CT and attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS), and follow on “A” and “C” schools.

His tours of duty include USS FLORIDA (SSBN/SSGN 728), RTC Great Lakes and two tours onboard USS HOWARD (DDG-83). He has earned his Submarine qualification, Enlisted Surface and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist insignias as well as his Master Training Specialist certification. Master Chief Newell has an Associate’s degree in General Studies from American Military University and is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 202/Gold Group).

In his most recent tout onboard USS HOWARD, he has assumed the duties as EM Division LCPO, Engineering Department Leading Chief Petty Officer and interim duties as USS HOWARD Command Master Chief.

Master Chief Newell’s military decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal(2 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal(3 awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, as well as numerous other unit citation and service awards. He is most proud of his four Battle “E” awards, which were earned by working together with his shipmates and earned as a crew.
