YOKOSUKA, JAPAN - Navy Career Counselor 1st Class Sandra Lewis of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen (DDG-82) received the Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 Senior Sailor of the Quarter award Friday, presented by Commodore, Capt. William T. Wagner.

After being selected as Lassen’s Senior Sailor of the Quarter, Lewis went on to compete against senior sailors from other commands under DESRON 15. DESRON 15 is the Immediate Superior in Command (ISIC) of USS Mustin, USS Stethem, USS Fitzgerald, USS Curtis Wilbur, USS John S. McCain, USS McCampbell, and USS Lassen.

Lewis garners a great deal of responsibility on board Lassen. She fields daily questions from the crew concerning Perform to Serve (PTS) applications, detailers, orders, continuing education, and rate conversion. Lewis has organized an exceptional group of Departmental and Divisional Career Counselors to assist her in crew training and career development.

“I try to provide the most accurate information to my sailors so that they may choose the best options available to them,” said Lewis. “It is also important to keep in mind that at the end of the day, many sailors go home to their families and my work will also affect them.”

Lewis’s dedication to Lassen’s crew extends beyond her work in rate. She serves as vice president of the First Class Leadership Association (FCLA), volunteers for the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee as well as the Multicultural Committee. She also is an integral member of the Damage Control Training Team (DCTT) and Medical Training Team (MTT), keeping the crew prepared for any situation.

When Lewis first entered the Navy she received advice from her recruiter, now Chief Personnel Specialist Walker, which she continues to pass on to her sailors: do what is right and success will follow. This motivates her everyday to provide the best service she can to sailors and hopes it motivates them to succeed.

Lewis was extremely honored and thankful that Commodore Wagner visited Lassen to present her as DESRON 15 Senior Sailor of the Quarter. Continuing her work, Lewis re-enlisted on Monday after nine years of service. Lassen is assigned to DESRON 15 and is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
