Commander Nicole Shue, a native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Oceanography. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Global Leadership from the University of San Diego and is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College.
Her surface navy career began as Main Propulsion Division Officer aboard USS TARAWA (LHA 1) with a deployment to the Persian Gulf and included a non-combatant evacuation of Ethiopia. She completed a second deployment and operational test launches of Tomahawk cruise missiles as Strike Officer aboard USS MILIUS (DDG 69). Commander Shue completed her third Middle East deployment as Weapons and Combat Systems Officer in USS PREBLE (DDG 88) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
Commander Shue’s shore tours include Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific, Navy Office of Legislative Affairs and United States Central Command Office of Legislative Affairs, Washington DC. After serving as Executive Officer, under the Fleet-Up program, she assumed duties as Commanding Officer, USS HIGGINS (DDG 76) in May, 2013.
Commander Shue also serves as the President ex-officio of the Sea Service Leadership Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to the mentorship and professional development of women of the three maritime services.
Commander Shue’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (three stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three stars) and various unit and campaign awards.
