SAN DIEGO – Five Reserve Officer Training Corps midshipmen from various universities reported aboard USS Higgins (DDG 76) for training, June 4.
During their three week stay on board, the midshipmen will be involved in all aspects of the surface Navy. This training opportunity will allow them to truly see what the surface warfare community is like, and assist them in making educated career decisions upon commissioning.
Each Midshipman has been assigned two running mates; one from the engineering department and one from the combat systems/weapons department. They will experience all aspects of shipboard life, not limited to one department. Their first day on board Higgins, they were taken on a RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) ride to Al Basra Oil Terminal where they met Commander, Task Group Iraqi Maritime, received a tour and spent the night. Other activities included conning alongside an underway replenishment, participating in damage control, engineering, and anti-terrorism force protection drills, participating in a small arms gun shoot, and a helicopter ride.
USS Higgins is assigned to the Carl Vinson Strike Group, home ported in San Diego, and worked in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) prior to entering the 5th Fleet AOR, shortly after leaving San Diego in January.
Carl Vinson Strike Group consists of flagship USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, guided-missile cruisers USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), and the embarked Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1. Ships assigned to DESRON 1 include USS Stockdale (DDG 106), USS Gridley (DDG 101), USS Higgins (DDG 76), USS Rentz (FFG 46), and USS McClusky (FFG 41).
