Command Master Chief (March 2012 - October 2012)
Master Chief Smith is a second generation native of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He enlisted in the Navy in February 1985 traveling from Colorado to Orlando, Florida for Recruit Training. After completion of Recruit Training, Basic Electricity/Electronics, Electronics Technician 'A' and 'C' Schools, he reported to USS PROTEUS (AS 19) located in Guam as an ET3 in December 1986. While onboard, he advanced to Second Class Petty Officer. He reported to his next tour in February 1990 on board the USS LYNDE MCCORMICK (DDG 8) homeported in San Diego, California. During this tour, he advanced to First Class Petty Officer and earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare pin.
ET1(SW) Smith reported to Advanced Electronics School Service School Command in San Diego, as an Instructor and became the Course Curriculum Model Manager (CCMM) for the AIMS MK XII IFF Maintenance Course in November 1991. As the CCMM in October 1993, he represented the Chief of Naval Education and Training at Fleet Training Center Norfolk for the six month AIMS MK XII IFF Maintenance Course pilot culminating over one year of work rewriting the entire course in San Diego. Upon conclusion of this pilot course, he returned to Fleet Training Center San Diego and advanced to Chief Petty Officer in September 1994.
ETC(SW) Smith reported to his next tour in July 1995 on board USS ELLIOT (DD 967) located in San Diego. After a successful tour, he reported to Fleet Technical Support Center Detachment Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in September 1999. He coordinated the Fleet Technical Assist Visits involving senior civilian/military personnel within the detachment on various units within the region and advanced to Senior Chief in March 2000. Following this rewarding tour, he returned to sea on board USS DECATUR (DDG 73) in January 2003 and advanced to Master Chief within three months of reporting.
Upon selection for the Command Master Chief Program in January 2005, he attended and graduated the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 123) and the CMC/COB Capstone Course (Class 26). He served as Command Master Chief, USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG 60) May 2006 to July 2009. While onboard, he deployed twice to the Southern Pacific in support of Counter-Narcotics Terrorism Operations. During the 2007 deployment, the Coast Guard credited RODNEY M. DAVIS with the first liquid cocaine seizure in the Eastern Pacific.
He then served as Command Master Chief, USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53) August 2009 to March 2012. This tour included AEGIS modernization, missile testing and deploying with the JOHN C STENNIS Strike Group as Air Defense Commander. He reported aboard USS DECATUR (DDG 73) for a second time as Command Master Chief in March 2012.
Master Chief Smith's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), and Navy Good Conduct Medal (eight awards). He attributes all of his personal awards and successes to his family, mentors and the Sailors with whom he has proudly served exemplifying the Navy's Core Values of HONOR, COURAGE and COMMITMENT.
