Executive Officer (May 2010 - May 2012)
Commander Ellingson, a native of Seattle, Washington graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May of 1996. Following his commissioning, he attended the Surface Warfare Officers School Division Officers Course in Newport, Rhode Island.
His first assignment was in USS STEPHEN W. GROVES (FFG 29). While assigned he served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Combat Information Center Officer. His second division officer tour was in USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53), and USS COWPENS (CG 63) forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, where he was assigned as the Main Propulsion Assistant. His next assignment was as Ordnance Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG 48), also home ported in Yokosuka, Japan.
Following completion of the Surface Warfare Department Head Course in February 2003, he was assigned to USS BENFOLD (DDG 65), as Team BENFOLD Chief Engineer in support of the Commander Surface Forces Pacific DDG Sea Swap Experiment. He conducted a deployment to the Arabian Gulf onboard the USS HIGGINS (DDG 76) in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and returned to San Diego as Chief Engineer of the USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53). He then returned to the Forward Deployed Naval Forces in Yokosuka, Japan, where he served as the Plans and Exercises Officer in DESTROYER SQUADRON FIFTEEN, where he did exercise planning with allied naval forces including the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN), and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) in support of Commander Seventh Fleet theater engagement objectives.
In June 2006, he reported to the United States Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD, as the 16th Company Officer and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Seamanship and Navigation. From June 2008 to June 2009, he attended the United States Army Command and Staff College, in Fort Leavenworth, KS. In August 2009 he reported to Expeditionary Combat Readiness Command, in Norfolk, Virginia, and was forward deployed to the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, where he was assigned to the Plans Division in the Strategy, Policy and Assessments Directorate.
Commander Ellingson’s personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards) and the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and service awards.
