CDR Blandino Alvin Villanueva
Executive Officer

Commander Al Villanueva is from Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training / Pre-Physical Therapy. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in July 1998.

For CDR Villanueva’s initial sea duty assignment, he was First Division Officer and then Assistant First Lieutenant onboard USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47), where he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Exercises Iron Magic and Red Reef. His next sea tour was as Fire Control Officer onboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53), where he served during Operation Enduring Freedom.

For his first shore duty assignment, he was stationed in Fleet Combat Training Center, Pacific, which then became Tactical Training Group, Pacific where he served as Sea Launched Attack Missile Exercise (SLAMEX) Officer. He concurrently attended the University of San Diego, and graduated with a Master of Science in Global Leadership.

He served in his first Department Head tour as Chief Engineer onboard USS VANDEGRIFT (FFG 48) while forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, then homeport shifting to San Diego, CA. He served in his second Department Head tour as Material Officer (N4) in Commander, Destroyer Squadron Two One (CDS 21), where he deployed with the USS JOHN C. STENNIS Strike Group in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He then served as Flag Aide to VADM McCoy, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in Washington, DC.

CDR Villanueva attended the US Naval War College and earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, while also attending the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School (MAWS). This in preparation for his assignment as Lead Planner for Korean Operational Plans, with Commander, Seventh Fleet, embarked onboard USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19), while forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. He then served onboard USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101) as Executive Officer, and then at Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific (CNSP) in the Aviation Department (N42).

He currently serves as Executive Officer onboard USS DECATUR (DDG 73).
