|LT Dustin Smith
Lieutenant Dustin Smith was commissioned upon graduation from Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Pensacola, FL. Prior to OCS, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering. Later he earned a Master’s Degree from Pennsylvania State University in Nuclear Engineering.
His first assignment was in USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD-49) as Weapons and Force Protection Officer as a part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces Sasebo, Japan. During this tour he participated in FOAL EAGLE, COBRA GOLD, and Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2007 (CARAT) bilateral military exercises involving military forces from Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia.
Following nuclear training at Naval Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC and at Naval Nuclear Power Unit in Ballston Spa, NY, his second Division Officer tour was in USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) as Reactor Laboratories Division Officer and Assistant Reactor Electrical Assistant during a Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH).
Upon completion of Department Head School, he reported to USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) as Operations Officer and Executive Officer.
Ashore, he went on to serve as Lead Shift Engineer at Naval Nuclear Power Unit, Charleston, SC in USS SAMUEL RAYBURN (MTS-635), a converted ballistic missile submarine devoted to the qualification of Enlisted and Officer nuclear operators. Additionally during his time ashore, he completed his Master’s and JPME Phase I.
His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (Gold Star in lieu of Second Award), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
