USS BENFOLD had the honor of hosting Chef Ray L. Duey, Certified Executive Chef and owner of Chef Ray Presents, on the 26th of Feb while in BAE Shipyard, San Diego. Chef Ray is known for working culinary magic with various fruits and vegetables. His carvings have been featured at the White House and he has appeared on such shows as the Food Network’s Sugar Dome and most recently the American Horror Story.
Chef Ray took time out of his busy schedule to sit down with the Culinary Specialists onboard BENFOLD and teach them a few garnishing techniques. “It is an honor to teach the young men and women who wear our Nation’s cloth,” remarked the Chef. “It’s the least I can do to give back to those who defend our country and our way of life.” Chef Ray spent the morning teaching the sailors how to make melons look like flowers and turnips into sea urchins. He stated, “You can never be too creative when doing carvings with fruits and vegetables, the sky is the limit.” BENFOLD’s Commanding Officer, CDR Rich LeBron commented "Culinary Specialists are the heart of BENFOLD, working long hours to provide over 900 phenomenal meals a day to our crew. I'm very thankful that Chef Ray took time out of his day to continue to work one on one with the best Cooks in the Fleet!" CS1 Wade, S-2 Leading Petty Officer, said that he enjoyed how Chef Ray taught new and exciting ways of discovering a creative art. The Culinary Specialists are excited about the opportunity and look forward to putting their new skills to work when their galley becomes operational again on March 18th.
USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) is currently receiving the latest upgrades in Combat Systems and Ballistic Missile Defense. She is slated to begin her training cycle later this year.
