Arabian Gulf - Guided-missile Destroyer USS BENFOLD and her Engineering Department celebrated the success of repairing one of the ship’s gas turbine generators.
USS BENFOLD suffered a major casualty to one of three gas turbine generators, the ship’s source of electrical power. Supporting help from NSSA Norfolk and NSSA Bahrain flew out to BENFOLD as she continued maritime operations in the Fifth Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR). Through the collaborative troubleshooting, it was determined that numerous faulty internal connections were the cause of the generator casualty. Within a few hours after the diagnoses, GSE1 (SW) Rachyl Drennan, BENFOLD’s former Sailor of the Year, with the help from GSE1 (SW) Cesar Labrador and GSEFN Patrick Clarke were able to replace the faulty transformer and wiring, and re-established the connection to the Interface Module. Their combined efforts brought the generator back to life and BENFOLD back to 100% material readiness.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the efforts of BENFOLD Engineers- and ALL BENFOLD SAILORS- in keeping BENFOLD ship-shape and in fighting trim,” said BENFOLD’s Chief Engineer, LT Jason Harr. “Our Sailors work around the clock to ensure we’re always ready to put Hot Metal, On Target, When Directed.”
BENFOLD’s Commanding Officer, CDR Dave Oden, expressed his gratitude to his Sailors and the technical representatives from NSSA Norfolk and NSSA Bahrain. “When you have the forward leaning, mission-driven Sailors and civilian partners that support BENFOLD and the ships of the fleet, our Navy can’t help but remain the unstoppable Force for Good that we’ve been throughout our Nation’s history.” said CDR Oden. “As Commanding Officer, I simply could not ask for more from my crew and our supporting cast back home.”
BENFOLD is an Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer and serves as one of the Navy’s premier Ballistic Missile Defense ships in the Pacific. BENFOLD is currently deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
