Command Master Chief (June 2009 - May 2011)
CMDCM(AW/SW) Tiong is a native of Manila, Philippines. He graduated from San Diego High School in 1982. Master Chief Tiong entered active duty on July 11, 1983 and attended Recruit Training in San Diego, California. Upon completion of basic training, he reported to his command, USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65) as an undesignated Airman and subsequently struck into the Personnelman rate. Following a split tour, he reported to USS CONSTELLATION (CV-64) in July of 1984.
In August 1986, Master Chief Tiong transferred to Personnel Support Detachment North Island, San Diego, California. In August 1990, he reported to Personnel Support Detachment Misawa, Japan and Personnel Support Detachment Yokosuka, Japan in August 1993. From October 1996 to June 2001 he served onboard USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) in a variety of capacities, including Visit Board Search & Seizure, Personnel Officer and Administration Department LCPO. He was selected for advancement to Chief Petty Officer in 1998. In August 2001 he reported for duty at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois as a Recruit Division Commander and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer in 2002.
Following graduation from the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy in July 2004, he reported to USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) as Administration Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. In 2005 he was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer and subsequently applied for and was selected to the Command Master Chief program in 2007. His first tour as Command Master Chief was with HELICOPTER ANTI-SUBMARINE SQUADRON TWO (HS-2).
In June 2009, he reported to USS Benfold (DDG 65) as the Command Master Chief.
Master Chief Tiong’s decorations include the, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (1 gold star), and various campaign and service awards.
