Commanding Officer (October 2012 - March 2014)

CDR Rich LeBron hails from Bayamon, Puerto Rico where he enlisted in the Navy in 1989. While enlisted, he served as a Quartermaster on the “Gold” crew of USS JAMES K. POLK (SSBN 645). While assigned to POLK, Rich was selected to participate in the BOOST program. He was subsequently selected as an NROTC scholarship recipient and attended the University of San Diego, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marine Science.
His first assignment afloat as a commissioned officer was as the Main Propulsion Officer, Auxiliaries Officer, and Electrical Officer aboard USS THE SULLIVANS (DDG 68). While attached to THE SULLIVANS, he deployed to the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf Regions.
Rich was selected early for assignment as department head. Following his detachment from THE SULLIVANS he attended the Department Head Course as well as various specialty schools on the way to his next sea assignment, USS MILIUS (DDG 69).
While serving as Chief Engineer on MILIUS, Rich deployed as part of OPERATION NOBLE EAGLE in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. He later deployed to the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf regions.
Following his Chief Engineer tour, CDR LeBron reported to Afloat Training Group, Pacific where he served as a Propulsion Plant Assessor and assessment team scheduler.
Rich’s tours ashore include post-graduate studies at the University of Florida where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree; Special Assistant, Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Actions Group; Speechwriter to the Chief of Naval Operations; Special Assistant and Speechwriter to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Special Assistant to Commander, U.S. Southern Command; Special Assistant, Speechwriter, and Senior Staff Editor to Supreme Allied Commander, Europe / Commander, U.S. European Command.
After a lengthy exile ashore, Rich returned to sea where he served as Executive Officer of USS BENFOLD (DDG 65) prior to fleeting up as her Commanding Officer.
His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and service awards.
