|CDR Brian T. Mutty
Commanding Officer (July 2011 - December 2012)
Commander Mutty is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 16, 1992. In 1995, he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.
His first assignment at sea was onboard USS BAINBRIDGE (CGN 25) as a Nuclear trained Machinists Mate. Upon the completion of Surface Warfare Officers School Division Officer Course he reported to USS LABOON (DDG 58) where he served as Damage Control Assistant. From LABOON he transferred to USS AUSTIN (LPD 4) as CIC Officer. Upon the completion of Surface Warfare Officer School Department Head Course, he reported to USS COLE (DDG 67) as Operations Officer and Combat Systems Officer on USS ROSS (DDG 71).
CDR Mutty’s shore tours have included serving at OPNAV N86 as a Requirements Officer for the Littoral Combat Ship. While at OPNAV he volunteered for an Individual Augmentation assignment to support Joint CREW Composite Squadron One in Mosul, Iraq. He followed his OPNAV tour with an assignment as the Chief Plans Policy Branch on the Joint Staff, J-7, Operational War Plans Division.
In June 2010, Commander Mutty arrived in Yokosuka, Japan to serve as the Executive Officer onboard USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62). He is the first Executive Officer/Commanding Officer “fleet up” onboard FITZGERALD.
Commander Mutty holds a Master of Arts Degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Post Graduate School. In addition, he completed the Naval War College non-resident course for Joint Professional Military Education Phase I.
