YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- During a recent trip to Yokosuka, Japan, the assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs paid a visit to USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) July 24.
Andrew Shapiro, accompanied by Rear Adm. Richard Wren, commander, Naval Forces Japan, was welcomed aboard by Cmdr. Dennis Velez, Fitzgerald's commanding officer.
During a tour of the ship, Velez described numerous capabilities of Fitzgerald that included the ship's ballistic missile defense system, anti-submarine warfare combatant, damage control system and engineering plant.
The visit provided Shapiro a view into how an operational command works and how different administrative factors affect Sailors in the fleet.
"It helps to see what you guys do and how you operate," said Shapiro. "It's incredible what you guys do out here."
Fitzgerald is the 12th Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer and is forward-deployed to Yokosuka as part of Destroyer Squadron 15 and U.S. 7th Fleet.
