USS Russell (DDG 59) Sailors competed in Naval Surface Forces, Pacific’s Annual Surface Line Week (SLW) competition August 11-19, earning victories in multiple events and establishing themselves as a team to beat.
The competition brings together the crews of all Surface Navy commands in San Diego to compete on the field, court, track and workshops of Naval Base San Diego. Sailors participated in 34 different events both athletic and career oriented in nature.
RUSSELL Sailors performed with skill and good sportsmanship securing victory in a number of events, ultimately taking Second Place in the medium sized command division. For many crew members it was an opportunity to relax, enjoy the facilities that their base has to offer and build community among Sailors along the waterfront.
“Our Sailors were eager to demonstrate their skills in the professional events which included a First Place finish in both the Viscomm (Visual Communication) and the photography competitions,” said Lt. j.g. Martin Zuber, Russell’s SLW event coordinator,
The Viscomm event challenged Quartermasters to rapidly display signal flags, demonstrate knowledge of flags and pennants and utilize flashing light signals.
Russell also won the photography competition with an image of a freestyle swimming relay during which Russell Sailors narrowly claimed victory.
“I was impressed to see that our Sailors are as talented on the field as they are on the ship and by how they came together with Sailors from other commands to make the week a great success, ” said Zuber.
In the strength events, Russell saw success with victories in the powerlifting competition and the team pull-up/push-up event. Sonar Technician 2nd Class Timothy Darcy participated in both and won the individual powerlifting title with a sum of 1300 pounds in the back squat, deadlift and bench press.
“I enjoyed the events and it was a good time to get out there,” said Darcy. “There was a great team atmosphere between competitors and it was really enjoyable to participate. I will definitely be back to defend my title next year. ”
The Basketball team also took home victory in the basketball final held at Admiral Prout gym on Naval Base San Diego.
“It was a full team effort and it was great to see the progression the team made throughout the week which culminated in our championship win,” said Cryptologic Technician Technical 2nd Class Kevin Wollbrinck, who helped to lead the team throughout the tournament.
Overall Russell Sailors performed well and enjoyed victory in multiple Surface Line Week events. SLW offer a great opportunity for commands to build teamwork among the crew and to strengthen relationships across the waterfront.
