Congratulations on your orders to USS John S. McCain DDG-56! Named in honor of Admiral John S. McCain Sr. and Admiral John S. McCain Jr., this Arleigh Burke Class, Aegis guided missile destroyer is the third commissioned warship to carry the name "John S. McCain." Our officers and crew take great pride and stewardship of John S. McCain's superior reputation. We look forward to your membership on our winning team!
USS John S. McCain is home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. As a member of Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet's forward deployed naval forces (FDNF), you can expect a very high operational tempo throughout the Western Pacific. You can also expect a very rewarding tour on board.
While underway, the crew wears coveralls. I recommend obtaining two or three sets prior to your arrival, with U.S. Navy and warfare qualifications insignia sewn over left pocket and last name sewn over right pocket with rank sewn on the collars.
Your sponsor will arrange to have you picked up at the airport upon arrival. As a backup, PSD runs a bus that departs from Narita civilian airport to Fleet Activities Yokosuka at 1500, 1730, and 1900 on a daily basis. You check in for bus transportation at the military liaison desk located at Narita Airport Terminal 1 Northwest information counter. The bus ride is approximately 2 to 3 hours and will drop you off at PSD Yokosuka.
There is also transportation provided from Yokota Air Force Base to PSD Yokosuka. It is important that you keep your sponsor or the Executive Officer updated on your exact arrival information so that the ship can provide transportation.
If the ship is out to sea, the bus will drop you off at PSD. PSD will direct you to TPU for check in. If you are single TPU will provide berthing and assignments for you. If you are married and your family members are traveling with you, you will then proceed to the Navy Lodge. Service Members with family members must check in at the F.A.S.T Office and Housing Office. F.A.S.T. will require copies of important documents necessary for the welfare of your family members. They will also provide a helpful family folder. If the ship is at sea, and time permits prior to its return, proceed to the family service center at PSD and enroll in the one week "Area Orientation Brief/ Intercultural Relations" class (AOB/ICR).
If you are E-4 or above, married, and planning to move your family to Japan, you can reach our ombudsman here. E-3 and below cannot bring their family members to Japan.
- - The local base newspaper is an excellent source of information and is available at various locations on base.
- - If not already a member, I recommend that you join the Navy Federal Credit Union upon arrival.
- - U.S. money can be exchanged for yen at the community bank in PSD, at the O-Club, Chief's Club, Enlisted Club, and Seaside Restaurant. Both dollars and yen are good for getting an on-base taxi and you can claim your initial on-base taxi ride in your travel claim.

Again, welcome aboard, shipmate! As is obvious from this message, checking into Yokosuka is a very busy time. However, as a member of the MCCAIN family you are not alone. We will do everything we can to help make it a smooth transition.
Fortune Favors the Brave!
CDR Jeffrey J. Kim, Commanding Officer
