PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea (NNS) – Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) arrived in Pyeongtaek, Korea, for a scheduled port visit Oct. 16.
McCain’s visit follows Invincible Spirit 2016, which is a bilateral exercise with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy.
As part of the visit, McCain Sailors will engage in community relations (COMREL) events, including a number of sporting events, to continue the partnership with the people of the Republic of Korea. The ship’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program has organized tours and sightseeing events.
“I am excited to pull into Pyeongtaek because I’ve always wanted to visit South Korea,” said Seaman Austin Roberts. “I am going to visit the Demilitarized Zone and I think that is a once in a lifetime experience. I’m glad we are pulling into Pyeongtek and glad I have this opportunity.”
The ship will also take advantage of the shore facilities in port to conduct maintenance before continuing on patrol.
McCain is currently on patrol in waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
