|CDR Robert A. Heely Jr.
Commander Heely is a native of Norfolk, Virginia and a 1998 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He has a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.
At sea, he served as Communications Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant in USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS (FFG 58), Combat Information Center Officer and Assistant Operations Officer in USS LABOON (DDG 58), Commissioning Chief Engineer in USS SAMPSON (DDG 102), Chief Engineer in USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57), and Executive Officer in USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112).
Ashore, he served in OPNAV as a Counternarcotics Action Officer and Flag Aide to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information, Plans, and Strategy (N3/N5), Defense Legislative Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the Joint Staff as Deputy Legislative Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Commander Heely’s military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
