|CDR Matthew A. Smidt
A native of Seattle, Washington, Commander Smidt attended Washington State University graduating in May 2000 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology.
Afloat, CDR Smidt served onboard USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) in the Forward Deployed Naval Forces, Yokosuka, Japan. He served as OI division officer taking part in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. After completing his first tour, CDR Smidt attended Navy Nuclear Power Training Command graduating from that program in Summer 2003 and reporting to USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72) as Reactor Mechanical (2 Plant) Division Officer. Aboard ABRAHAM LINCOLN, CDR Smidt took part in a Drydocked Planned Incremental Availability and Operation UNIFIED ASSISTANCE.
After this tour, CDR Smidt reported to Commander Naval Air Forces Pacific detachment Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as Assistant Officer in Charge and Perspective Nuclear Engineering Officer Coordinator. During this shore tour, CDR Smidt completed a Master’s of Arts degree in Organization Systems Design at Seattle University and Joint Professional Military Education Phase One through the Navy War College.
CDR Smidt’s next sea tour was as Combat Systems Officer onboard USS CURTS (FFG 38) where he took part in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Following the tour on CURTS, CDR Smidt reported to Commander, Destroyer Squadron 21 as N6 officer. During this tour, CDR Smidt served as Advance Echelon Team Officer in Charge during the USNS MERCY PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP 2010 mission to Cambodia and Timor Leste. Upon returning from the PACIFIC PARTNERSHIP 2010 deployment, CDR Smidt fleeted up to the role of Staff Director and led the Destroyer Squadron 21 staff for a SEVENTH and FIFTH Fleet deployment work up and departure.
Following his department head sea tours, CDR reported to the Navy Office of Diversity and Inclusion (OPNAV N134) on the OPNAV staff in Arlington, VA. CDR Smidt began his tour as the lead of statistics and data analysis then took over as the Deputy Director Navy Equal Opportunity and finished that tour as the lead of the Plans and Policy section of OPNAV N134. His second OPNAV tour was on the staff of Director, Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96). His primary duty there was resource officer for fleet training and total ship training capability; additionally, he assisted on manpower wholeness special projects.
CDR Smidt’s latest sea tour was as Executive Officer USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62). In this role he executed a short notice home port shift from San Diego, CA to Yokosuka Japan and the integration of CHANCELLORSVILLE as the Battle Force SEVENTH Fleet Air Defense Commander.
Currently CDR Smidt is serving as the Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center (SMWDC) Commander’s Action Group Chair where he coordinates long range command programs.
