Plankowner of the Week
USS SPRUANCE Plankowner of the Week
USS Spruance (Feb 12, 2011) - As SPRUANCE’s inaugural Plankowner of the Week, IT3(SW) Carrillo epitomizes the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Onboard for little over a year, she has earned her Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) Pin after completing a seven month deployment on the USS MILIUS (DDG 69). A California native, she is excited to move to the east coast and take ownership of SPRUANCE. “I can’t wait to have my own ship,” she says. “I had a lot of fun being a part of the crew of the MILIUS for seven months, but I’m going to love being part of something I can call my own. I’m ready to go to sea again.”

Her interview follows:

Why did you join the Navy?

I joined the Navy in July 09 to further my education and to travel.

What is your job onboard SPRUANCE?

My job onboard the SPRUANCE is an Information Systems Technician Surface Warfare Petty Officer Third Class. I am in charge of ensuring that SPRUANCE is in constant contact with the outside world, which means Sailors have e-mail access or the Combat team can receive orders from an admiral on an aircraft carrier.

What do you like most about the Navy?

Traveling. I’ve been to Bahrain, Guam, Hawaii, and Dubai. Singapore was my absolute favorite because of the different culture and architecture. The huge buildings in Dubai were beautiful.

What do you most like about SPRUANCE?

It’s given me a chance to improve my education and I was able to go onboard another ship and learn my job when it wasn’t possible at the detachment. I have enough time to work on my qualifications.

What is most exciting about being on the newest navy destroyer and why?

I get to visit the East coast which I haven’t been able to get to very much and will be able to have my family there with me during the commissioning.

What are your long term goals?

To earn an Associates and Bachelors Degree in Computer Networking. I’m working towards my Associate’s Degree as we speak.

What is your favorite thing to do in San Diego?

I love going downtown and having the chance to go home on the weekends when I feel like it.
