Plankowner of the Week Questionnaire

Rate/Rank: DC2 / E-5
Name:  Turner, Ryan
Why and when you joined the Navy:  I joined the Navy weeks after 9/11, I wanted the opportunity to serve my country as proudly as my grandfather and uncles had during WWII and Vietnam. I am the only member out of my family that has enlisted in the Navy; I wanted to make my own destiny.

What is your job onboard SPRUANCE?  I am the lead instructor for Spruance Damage Control University, the Command Assistant Drug and Alcohol Programs Advisor (A-DAPA) and also trained as a Sexual Assault and Prevention Response (SAPR) advocate for SPRUANCE.

What you like most about the Navy: What I enjoy the most about the Navy is the opportunities that other Armed Forces don’t allow you. The ability to see various parts of the world while also being able to provide the support our troops need from us.
What you most like about the SPRUANCE: Unlike any other command I’ve been a part of, is the unity that we have with one another. Everyone has their own tasks and responsibilities, but the fact that you can count on another one of your shipmates to help you out when needed is unique. No one is out just for themselves.

What is most exciting about being on the newest navy destroyer and why? The most exciting thing to me is the variety of new equipment and systems that we are being equipped with and being able to become the experts of while qualifying our ship as the Best Destroyer in the Fleet.

What are your long term goals? I think with any sailor a long term goal would be to advance into a higher paygrade. However with the quantity of training that we receive in rate and out of rate, being able to train our junior sailors coming to the fleet is important. Giving them the tools to succeed will make them better and the fleet better also. I definitely want to earn my Bachelors and work towards another.

What are your favorite things to do in San Diego and Bath? I enjoy going to local sporting events (USD and SDSU basketball and Padres and Charger games), going to San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, and hiking around San Diego County.
