Commander Dan Cobian is a native of San Diego, CA. Upon completion of high school in 1988, he enlisted in the Navy as an Electronic’s Technician. After four years of enlisted service he was accepted into the BOOST program and graduated in 1996 from the University of San Diego with a Bachelors degree in Business Economics. Upon commissioning, he reported aboard USS FORT FISHER (LSD 40) where he served as Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer preparing the ship for decommissioning. He then reported to USS PRINCETON (CG 59) and assumed duties as the Main Propulsion Assistant and remained on board for his second tour as the Fire Control Officer. During his time on board, PRINCETON was the Air Defense Commander for the CARL VINSON STRIKE GROUP where she conducted Tomahawk Strikes in support of Operation Desert Fox. Prior to reporting to Department Head School, Commander Cobian attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where he earned a Masters in Financial Management.
Upon completion of Department Head school, he reported to USS STETHEM (DDG 63) where he served as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer from 2003-2006. During this tour, the ship was homeported in both San Diego, CA and then Yokosuka, Japan as part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces. In 2006, after his department head tours, he reported to OPNAV N3/N5 and was assigned to the Maritime Security branch where he served as the Executive Assistant to the Director, Maritime Domain Awareness (OPNAV N5MDA) and was then selected to serve as the Executive Assistant to the Director, Strategy and Policy (OPNAV N5). Following his tour at OPNAV he was selected for the Federal Executive Fellowship Program and served as the Navy Fellow at RAND Corportion in Washington D.C. CDR Cobian then deployed with USS NIMITZ as part of Commander Destroyer Squadron Two Three staff in support of the ASW Beta Test. CDR Cobian most recently completed his tour at Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. During this tour he served as the Deputy Executive Assistant, Flag Secretary and Flag Aide to the Commander.
CDR Cobian’s personal awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and various campaign and unit awards.
