|CDR Andrew J. Klug
Lieutenant Commander Klug is a native of Wheeling, West Virginia. He graduated from Bethany College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1999. He was commissioned in September 2000 after completing Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.
His first sea tour was in USS PORTLAND (LSD 37) home ported in Virginia Beach, VA where he served as Main Propulsion Division Officer, and later the Navigator from August 2001 to August 2003. He conducted two deployments including a surge deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received his Surface Warfare Officer qualification during this tour.
From August 2003 to June 2005, he served as Navigator in USS PONCE (LPD 15) home ported in Norfolk, VA. In 2005, he once again deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While in PONCE, he qualified Engineering Officer of the Watch (Steam) and Tactical Action Officer.
He attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI from August 2005 to June 2006. He earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies and Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I qualification.
Following his graduation from Surface Warfare Department Head School in 2007, he became the Chief Engineer in MCM CREW IMPERVIOUS where he served onboard USS CHIEF (MCM 14) and USS AVENGER (MCM 1) home ported in Ingleside, TX from September 2007 to March 2009. In addition to qualifying Engineering Officer of the Watch (Diesel) and Mine Warfare Evaluator, he also received his qualification for Early Command.
In November 2009, LCDR Klug took command of PC CREW FOXTROT home ported in Virginia Beach, VA. He commanded USS SQUALL (PC 7), USS FIREBOLT (PC 10) and USS HURRICANE (PC 3). While on FIREBOLT, he led his crew through a Fifth Fleet deployment conducting maritime security operations (MSO) and infrastructure protection in concert with the turnover of those responsibilities to Iraqi forces. He achieved his Command Qualification at the culmination of his tour in January 2011.
LCDR Klug’s shore tours include Surface Training Requirements Officer at both OPNAV N15 and OPNAV N96 and as Deputy Chief of Staff in Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
He currently resides in Aiea, Hawaii with his wife, the former Miss Stephanie Sterns of Sistersville, WV and their son, Reid.
