Commander Tom Williams, U.S. Navy, was named the pre-commissioning Commanding Officer for WILLIAM P. LAWRENCE (DDG-110), the 60th ARLEIGH BURKE class destroyer, in March 2009. After attending public schools in Reston, Virginia, he received a commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Program at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1992.
His sea tours include: Executive Officer, USS ANZIO (CG-68) deploying to the Mediterranean Sea in 2006; Operations Officer, Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-ONE, deploying to the North Arabian Sea in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM in 2002; Operations Officer, USS HIGGINS (DDG-76) deploying to the North Arabian Gulf in support of Middle East Force and Maritime Interception Operations in 2000-2001; Executive Officer and Operations Officer, USS CHINOOK (PC-9) deploying to EUCOM in support of Naval Special Warfare units in 1996; and 1st Lieutenant and Main Propulsion Assistant, USS TICONDEROGA (CG-47) deploying to the Mediterranean Sea in support of NATO Operations in 1995.
Ashore Commander Williams served in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J5) of the Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D. C. 2008-2009; as Administrative Aide to the Secretary of the Navy and Department of the Navy Executive Secretary 2006-2007; White House Fellow and Special Assistant to the NASA Administrator 2003-2004; Special Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations 2002-2003; and Instructor and PCO/PXO Course Supervisor at the Aegis Training and Readiness Center, Dahlgren VA in 1997-1998. Commander Williams received a Masters in International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Washington D.C. in 1999.

At the Pre-Commissioning Detachment in San Diego, Sailors visited their sister ship, USS Stockdale (DDG 106).
