USS WAYNE E. MEYER, At sea - Sailors aboard guided missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) took time to celebrate Christmas while deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility Dec. 25.
Separated from loved ones, the crew enjoyed the holiday spirit while remaining focused on the mission.
Every member of the crew received a gift from Cub Scout Pack 678. The Cub Scouts' annual event, Project Holiday Stockings, included a card and stocking for deployed service members.
"It's difficult to be so far away from loved ones during the holidays, but at times like these, the ship does a good job making us feel at home and part of a family," said Fire Controlman 1st Class Adam Richardson.
Wayne E. Meyer's Culinary specialists and temporarily-assigned food service personnel served a traditional holiday meal to the crew. The meal included prime rib, turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn on the cob and an assortment of homemade cookies, cakes and pies.
"The culinary specialists truly outdid themselves this time," said Fire Controlman 3rd Class Jacob Duesing. "I didn't think anything could have topped the Thanksgiving meal, but tonight everything was absolutely delicious."
Wayne E. Meyer wrapped up the holiday meal with a few remarks from the senior leadership.
"Its difficult being away from our families during this holiday season, but the crew put together a phenomenal meal, decorated the ship, and shared the Christmas spirit giving everybody a little taste of home. This year it was our duty to be at sea during the holidays, and I could not be more proud of everything my crew has accomplished," said Cmdr. Leo Albea, commanding officer of Wayne E. Meyer.
Wayne E. Meyer is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations and support missions in Operation Enduring Freedom.
