Navy Counselor First Class (SW) Phillip Lopez hails from Ganado, Texas. He graduated from Ganado High School and entered the United States Navy, attending basic training in Great Lakes, Ill. in Jul. 1997.
Petty Officer Lopez attended Seaman Apprentice Training School. Immediately following basic training in Oct. 1997 he reported to his first duty station the USS Anzio (CG 68) in Norfolk, Va.
During this assignment, he struck into the Signalman rating and was promoted to third class petty officer in 1999. In 2000, he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification followed by promotion to second class petty officer.
In Jul. 2001, Petty Officer Lopez reported to the USS Chosin (CG 65) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as Navigation Department Leading Petty Officer for three years. In Mar. 2004, he was selected for conversion into the Navy Counselor rating following the disestablishment of the Signalman rating. He was promoted to first class petty officer in 2004.
He served his first shore tour at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center in San Diego, where he reported in Dec. 2004. Upon arrival Petty Officer Lopez assumed duties as Divisional Leading Petty Officer. He was selected as Senior Sailor Of the Quarter for 4th quarter 2007.
In Feb. 2008, he reported to Pre-commissioning Detachment Wayne E. Meyer in San Diego. Upon arrival, he assumed duties as PRECOM Detachment Leading Petty Officer. He was selected as Senior Sailor Of the Quarter for 2nd quarter 2009. During his 4 years aboard, Petty Officer Lopez has filled the role as Navigation and Administration Department Leading Petty Officer. He was selected as Senior Sailor Of the Year for 2012.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4) and Good Conduct Medal (5) and various campaign awards.
