Lieutenant Commander Hoegel’s first sea tour was aboard USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) where he served as Main Propulsion Division Officer from December 1997 to December 1999. During that tour he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea supporting NATO operations in Kosovo. From April 2000 to August 2001, he served as Assistant Operations Officer in USS COWPENS (CG 63). During that period, COWPENS made two deployments, one including one as Alternate Air Defense Commander for Carrier Group Five.
Ashore, Lieutenant Commander Hoegel served as a combat systems instructor at Surface Warfare Officer’s School from September 2001 to October 2002. He was subsequently selected as Flag Aide to President, Naval War College, where he served from October 2002 to January 2004.
Following Department Head School, Lieutenant Commander Hoegel served as pre-commissioning Operations Officer in USS NEW ORLEANS (LPD 18) from August 2004 to October 2007. He then served as Operations Officer in USS ANTIETAM (CG 54) from January 2008 to August 2009. During this period, ANTIETAM won the 2008 Battle “E” Award and conducted a Seventh Fleet deployment serving as Air Defense Commander for Carrier Strike Group THREE.
Lieutenant Commander Hoegel most recently served as the first Flag Secretary to Commander, Carrier Strike Group ONE, where he stood up the Navy’s first new Carrier Strike Group in more than two decades. He assumed his duties as the Executive Officer in March 2011.
