CDR Alex Mamikonian

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Commander Mamikonian attended Leysin American High School in Switzerland and later Purdue University, where he was commissioned upon graduation in 2000.

He has served aboard Cruisers, Destroyers, and Mine Sweepers in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets, deploying to every Combatant Command theater of operation.

At sea, Mamikonian’s assignments include First Lieutenant in USS JOHN YOUNG (DD 973) and Main Propulsion Assistant in USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73). His Department Head tours were in USS GLADIATOR (MCM 11), USS SENTRY (MCM 3), and USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57), all as Chief Engineer.

Ashore, he served as a Seamanship and Navigation Instructor at the United States Naval Academy; United Nations Military Observer and Branch Chief of Maritime Operations in Port au Prince, Haiti; and Flag Aide to the Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

He most recently completed a tour as the Naval Guns and Directed Energy Section Head in the Surface Warfare Division (N96), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Mamikonian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Purdue University and a Master of Science degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

He was recognized as the 2003 Ship Handler of the Year for Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Additional awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various campaign, unit, and service medals.
