SAN DIEGO -
Command of the guided missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106) passed from Cmdr. Bo Johns to Cmdr. Sean Grunwell in the traditional change of command ceremony at Naval Base San Diego, Oct. 30.
An audience of more than 100 family, friends, and Navy and civilian dignitaries assembled to watch command shift from Johns to Grunwell.
Sybil Stockdale, wife of the late Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale for whom the ship was named, was in attendance alongside their son, Taylor and his wife Anne.
Johns leaves Stockdale after leading the ship through a 10-month deployment to the U.S. Fifth and Seventh Fleet Areas of Responsibility, two CNO Selected Restricted Availabilities, and two full training cycles.
"It has been an honor to serve in Stockdale," said Johns, who had previously served as the ship’s executive officer before taking command. "While it has been a privilege to be your captain, it has been an even greater honor just to be on the same team as all of you. I know that you will continue to propel Stockdale to new heights with Cmdr. Grunwell in charge."
Johns next assignment will be on board USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) where he will serve as the ship’s reactor officer.
Grunwell fleeted-up to command, having previously served as Stockdale’s executive officer for the past 18 months.
"Stockdale’s crew tackles any and all challenges with professionalism. Its selfless dedication to duty is to be admired and in line with how Admiral Stockdale would want Sailors to lead," said Grunwell. "Cmdr. Johns helped create that climate and our success is built upon his efforts. I look forward to continuing to serve alongside the best Sailors in the Fleet.”
