On July 17, 2010, USS STOCKDALE hosted 21 students from the Army and Navy Academy’s Summer Leadership Camp for a visit and tour.
“Camp Challenge,’ as the Academy has named it, provides an opportunity for students who do not attend JROTC affiliated schools the opportunity to complete a school year’s worth of JROTC training in five weeks at the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA.
While the camp teaches these high school students basic leadership principles and introduces them to the military and its lifestyle, this visit was the students’ first and only opportunity to see first-hand how the lessons they have learned at camp translate into real life operations in the military. It was a great day for our crew, spending time with these fine aspiring officers, and enjoying a visit with Stan Stockdale, son of our Namesake.
The students received hands-on training in both basic damage control and small arms safety and operations from STOCKDALE Sailors. Additionally, the students shared dinner with the Sailors and learned more about the diverse jobs and backgrounds of those serving in the Navy. STOCKDALE had a great day with these fine men and women.
