Originally from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, CDR Johns graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1995 with a degree in Mathematics. He also holds a Masters Degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.

CDR Johns has served at sea as First Lieutenant in USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62), Machinery Division Officer in USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65), Operations Officer in USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53), and Reactor Electrical Assistant in USS NIMITZ (CVN 68). He served as Executive Officer in STOCKDALE from November 2011 to May 2013.

CDR Johns has served ashore as Surface Nuclear Junior Officer Detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN, and as Executive Assistant to the Deputy Commander of STRIKFORNATO in Naples, Italy.
