Raised in Ohio, Joe Grgetich enlisted in the Navy in 1983 as a deck seaman. He attended boot camp in Orlando, Florida and upon graduation served onboard USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1) from 1983 - 1986 making two deployments. He detached the Navy as a BM3 but remained in the Active Reserves assigned to Assault Craft Unit TWO in Little Creek, Virginia and made BM2. He returned to active duty under the Navy Veteran (NAVET) Program in 1988.
Master Chief Grgetich's afloat career nearly 24 years with tours onboard the USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1), Assault Craft Unit TWO, Assault Craft Unit FIVE Loadmaster/Instructor and Craftmaster, and Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE where he completed a combined total of 13 Western Pacific, Mediterranean Sea, and overseas deployments including a tour at Camp Patriot, Kuwait.
During his 1993 deployment on USS FORT FISHER (LSD 40) he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare (ESWS) device and in 2002, as a member of Amphibious Construction Battalion ONE, he earned the Seabee Combat Warfare (SCW) device.
His shore career includes Commander Pacific Fleet Pearl Harbor Hawaii Elite Honor Guard and NAS Whidbey Island Security Detachment. He's credited to being the "first Chief Petty Officer" to attend and graduate from the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy Class 130 Brown and hand selected as a Mentor to Chief Petty Officer Selectees onboard USS CONSTITUTION.
His personal awards include Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy Achievement medal (three awards) and is currently pursuing an associate's degree.
