Commanding Officer

Raised in Williston, North Dakota, Commander Rockstad entered the Navy as a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy where he was commissioned following graduation in 1996. He assumed duties as Commanding Officer of USS Dewey (DDG 105) on the 7th of March, 2014.

His operational assignments include duties as Communications Officer and Strike Warfare Officer in USS Antietam (CG 54), as Fire Control Officer in USS Gary (FFG 51), as Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer and Navigator in USS Thach (FFG 43), as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS Howard (DDG 83), and as Executive Officer in USS Dewey (DDG 105).

Ashore, he has served as a Cruise Missile Instructor at Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific, as a student at the George Washington University, as the Atlantic Fleet Cruiser/Destroyer Placement Officer at Navy Personnel Command, as a student at the U.S. Naval War College, and as an Action Officer for ballistic missile defense issues in the Operations Directorate/J3 on the Joint Staff.

Commander Rockstad earned a BS in history, a MA in organizational management, and a MA in national security and strategic studies.
