|Commander Rich McDaniel
Commanding Officer (March 2011 - July 2012)
Commander Rich McDaniel is a native of Jackson, Tennessee and a graduate of the University of Memphis where he received a BA in History in August 1992. Additionally, he is a 2006 Distinguished Graduate and Halsey Group participant of the Naval War College where he obtained a Masters in National Security Affairs and Strategic Studies.
His initial assignment was to Surface Warfare Officers School Division Officers Course. Subsequently, he was assigned as Communications Officer on USS ENGLAND (CG 22) from April 1993 to January 1994. His second assignment was on USS PAUL HAMILTON (DDG 60) where he served as First Lieutenant, Ordnance Officer, Strike Officer, and Weapons Officer from January 1994 to November 1997. During December 1996, he made the maiden deployment as a Middle East Force deployer to the Arabian Gulf where he served as Strike Officer and Maritime Intercept Operations Boarding Officer.
His first Department Head tour was as Combat System Officer on USS OBANNON (DD 987) from October 2000 to April 2002 where he made an Eastern Pacific Counter Drug Operations tour and participated in UNITAS 2000 with the country of Colombia. His second Department Head tour was as Operations Officer for Destroyer Squadron Six from May 2002 until December 2003 where he planned and executed two UNITAS exercises with Ecuador and Brazil. Additionally, he planned and executed the inaugural Commander Southern Forces Command, PANAMAX exercise with the country of Panama. His follow-on sea assignment was as Strike Officer and Maritime Operations Officer for Carrier Strike Group Twelve from January 2004 to April 2005 where he deployed in support of Summer Pulse 2004. During the fall of 2006, Commander McDaniel reported as Executive Officer aboard USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58) where he completed the IWO JIMA ESG Deployment 2006, led the ship through CG conversion, and deployed with the NASSAU Expeditionary Strike Group to Fifth and Sixth Fleets.
Commander McDaniel’s shore duty assignments include Officer Manpower Requirements Analyst at the Naval Manpower Analysis Center, Millington, Tennessee from 1997 to 1999, and as the Surface Warfare Lieutenant Commander and Commander Detailer, Navy Personnel Command, Pers-411 from October 2008 to May 2010.
Commander McDaniel has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards) and the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards).
